RICHMOND, Va. — A North Carolina woman has pleaded guilty in Virginia in connection with what the government calls an interstate prostitution ring.
Michelle Matney entered her plea Thursday in Richmond federal court to conspiracy to persuade others to travel in interstate commerce to engage in prostitution. The 38-year-old resident of Greensboro, N.C., faces up to five years in prison at her sentencing May 10.
According to a statement of facts filed with a plea agreement, Matney admitted recruiting and supervising an unspecified number of prostitutes from 2010 through 2012. Prosecutors say she recruited sex workers, put them to work in other states and received a portion of their earnings.
Henrico County police in suburban Richmond arrested several women who implicated Matney.
