LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — A man has been seriously injured after a train and car collided in Prince George’s County Wednesday afternoon.
Prince George’s County fire and rescue personnel said a northbound CSX train struck a 2001 Ford Mustang as it attempted to cross the railroad tracks on Brandywine Road near Cherry Tree Crossing Road in Brandywine.
The 25-year-old driver suffered life-threatening injuries when he was ejected from the vehicle and was flown in a meda-vac helicopter to a local trauma center, fire officials said.
Officials said the railroad crossing at Brandywine Road is at street level and not protected by crossing arms. Preliminary investigation shows the man may have tried to drive over the tracks even as the lights at the crossing were flashing red.
County police are investigating the accident.
