SPRINGFIELD, Va.— Fairfax County Police have charged three students at West Springfield High School with possessing and distributing child pornography as part of an ongoing investigation.

The three students, ages 15 and 16, were charged last month, but police did not make the charges public because the investigation continues. Police say they have identified six teenage girls from high schools in the region who were victims. Police won’t say how the illicit videos were distributed.

The school’s principal addressed the issue Monday in a letter to parents. Principal Mark Greenfelder wrote that none of the alleged crimes took place on school property and he regrets “that our school was dragged into this story.”

Police say the investigation began in November when the school resource officer was told of a possible crime.
