LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) – Three masked men armed with guns and pepper spray robbed a jewelry store in downtown Frederick on Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Frederick city police received a call at about 1:30 p.m. for a robbery at Colonial Jewelers, at 1 South Market St. in the heart of downtown Frederick. Customers and store employees said three men entered the store and pepper sprayed several people before grabbing merchandise from the store’s jewelry cases and fleeing the scene.

Police said they are searching for three black males who are possibly driving a dark-colored pickup truck.

People who were exposed to pepper spray were treated on scene and there were no other injuries, police said.

A part of West Patrick Street was closed to traffic shortly after the robbery but was reopened by 4 p.m., police said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Cpl. A. Lapp at 301-600-6390 or contact the Frederick Police Department anonymously at 301-600-8477 or by email at fpdcrimetip@frederickmdpolice.org.

Thieves committed a similar robbery in Virginia on Monday. Four masked men smashed display cases with hammers inside Zales Jewelers at the Fashion Centre mall in Pentagon City around 11 a.m. Monday and made off with more than $128,000 in stolen jewelry, Arlington police said.

After scooping up 27 rings, the men exited the mall to the nearest parking garage where a getaway driver was waiting. The group fled the scene, crashing through the exit arm of the garage.

Employees were in the store at the time of the robbery but no one was injured.
