D.C. DMV Releases List of Banned Vanity Plates
LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC)– Good luck turning your Chevy into the Batmobile in D.C. Believe it or not, “BATMAN” is among the thousands of license plates banned in the District.
Indeed, Caped Crusader, the Department of Motor Vehicles is your latest villain.
If you’re a fan of the Cat Woman, you’re also out of luck. ‘CATMBL’ is a no-no, too.
In response to a Freedom of Information Act request, the department recently released a 68-page list of forbidden vanity plates to GovernmentAttic.org.
The majority of plates on the list are likely to be considered racist, offensive or both. Others, however, will leave you scratching your head — wondering why it was banned.
Take, for instance, ‘ARCHIE’, ‘CELL’, ‘AVIATOR’, ‘CHATEAU’, ‘CALIGRL’, ‘BBOLD’, ‘DIESEL’, ‘DREAMIN’, ‘EARTHY’, ‘EDUKTOR’, and ‘FROG.’
If you’re a jokester or risk taker, you’re probably not going to like the fact that ‘HAHA’ and ‘GUTZ’ are also outlawed.
And for the lawyers among us, what about ‘HEARSAY’?
Although a copy of department procedures for screening vanity plate applications was requested, a letter sent along with the dozens of pages of rejections said “No records
found responsive to this request,” implying that no such procedures exist.
So, we’ll just have to keep guessing why the movie lovers who wanted their cars to sport ‘BTLJUCE’ and ‘TOPGUN’ tags were turned down.
