Company Develops Bulletproof White Boards For Teachers

POCOMOKE CITY, Md. (CBSDC) — A Maryland armor company has designed a bulletproof white board following the Newtown, Conn., school shooting that left 26 people dead, including 20 children.

Hardwire Armor Systems developed the 18-by-20 inch white board that can absorb multiple clips of ammunition from close range.

“As teachers are doing their daily lesson plans, it’s in their hands. And if there’s a crisis, it’s in their hands,” Hardwire CEO George Tunis told The Salisbury Daily Times. “Teachers are not first responders, but sometimes they’re thrust into that role.”

The white board, which weighs less than 4 pounds, has handles on the back of the board which allows teachers to immediately to turn it into a shield in order to cover their heads and torsos.

“It’s something I don’t think any American can tolerate anymore, and we’re in a position to do something about it,” Tunis told The Daily Times. “I was like — all right, let’s take everything we got, see what we can throw at this problem, figure out an innovative solution.”

The bulletproof white boards provide protection to the standards of the National Institute of Justice and its armor technology “is derived from solutions developed for the Department of Defense.”

Hardwire has also developed a 10-by-13 inch bulletproof clipboard.

The bulletproof white boards sell for $299.
