LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — The driver killed in a single-vehicle crash on I-270 Tuesday morning has been identified by police as 50-year-old Cristina Durdandal, of Frederick.

No other vehicles were involved in the collision and there were no passengers in Durdandal’s vehicle.

The accident occurred around 5:20 a.m. near the Shady Grove Road exit. Twenty minutes later all lanes of the interstate had been shut down. Traffic was diverted onto the local lanes between West Montgomery Village Avenue and I-370 to pass the scene of the accident.

A preliminary investigation conducted by Maryland State Police showed that Durdandal was driving her 2011 Scion xD in a southbound lane when she lost control of the car. It traveled onto the left shoulder, colliding with the jersey wall separating the north and southbound lanes. The impact was so severe that portions of the barrier broke off and landed on the northbound lanes. A bulldozer was brought to the scene to help clear the debris.

Speed and driver error are believed to be factors in the crash, but police are still investigating to determine the exact cause of the collision.
