WASHINGTON (CBSDC/AP) – Beyonce’s rousing rendition of the American national anthem, lauded by many, may not have been left up to chance, if new reports are to be believed.
Beyonce lip-synced the national anthem during her rousing performance at President Barack Obama’s inauguration, according to the U.S. Marine Band.
A band spokeswoman told news outlets Tuesday that the band was notified at the last-minute that Beyonce would use a pre-recorded voice track. The band played their instruments live.
“We performed, live, the band,” Marine Corp Band spokeswoman Kristen DuBois was quoted as saying by Time magazine. “But we received last-minute word that Beyonce was going to use the pre-recorded vocal track. Those were the instructions we were given. We don’t know what the reason why.”
Time magazine stated that rumblings of doubt began when several publications then shared Instagram photos of the singer in a studio holding sheet music to the anthem as proof that her performance wasn’t live.
However, DuBois reportedly told The New York Post and The Times of London that recording a version of the song to a backing track is customarily done before the day of the inauguration, as a precaution. According to the Associated Press, all inaugural music is pre-recorded in case weather conditions or other circumstances could interrupt the program.
“All music is pre-recorded for the ceremony because there are so many eventualities and conditions that day,” she said according to both publications.
A representative for Beyonce did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Kelly Clarkson’s representative said she sang live to perform “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee.”
The use of a recording is typical in big events. In 2009, cellist Yo-Yo Ma was questioned about “hand-synching” for Obama’s first inauguration. Ma said instruments weren’t functioning properly in 19-degree weather.
