WASHINGTON — A District of Columbia man faces 45 years following a manslaughter conviction for the death of a man stabbed while arguing over whether the victim’s dog had soiled the defendant’s lawn.

Jurors acquitted Elsworth Colbert on first- and second-degree murder charges after two days of deliberation. The Washington Post reports that Colbert was also found guilty Friday of weapons charges. He is scheduled to be sentenced March 19.

Robert Leroy Wright, 36, was stabbed March 4 while walking a friend’s dog in their Penn Branch neighborhood. Prosecutors say Colbert walked from his house to Wright’s home with a knife and walking stick and confronted him. Authorities say there was no sign that the pit bull actually soiled Colbert’s lawn.

Colbert’s attorney argued that Colbert defended himself after being attacked.
