CHESTERFIELD, Va.— A suburban Richmond zoo has been cleared of any wrongdoing stemming from a deadly tiger attack last year.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said Tuesday that an inspector found no violations by the Metro Richmond Zoo related to a white Bengal tiger that was killed by another tiger in November.

The 5-year-old female tiger named McCoy was attacked by a 2 1/2-year-old male named Kumba minutes after McCoy had swatted at the other cat in an outdoor enclosure.

USDA spokesman Dave Sacks says the agency sent an inspector to the zoo as part of its Animal Welfare Act enforcement efforts.

Zoo officials had said it was the first time there had been an attack with its cats. They said it happened so quickly that there’s nothing zoo staff could’ve done.
