LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — In an effort to lift the spirits of the recovering Robert Griffin III, radio station WPGC is changing its name to WRG3 for the weekend.
During his inaugural campaign, Griffin ignited the Redskins fan base while leading Washington to seven straight victories to close the regular season and capture the team’s first NFC East title since 1999.
The name change is the first since the station adopted the WPGC call letters in 1958.
The Redskins’ postseason stay proved brief, as Griffin suffered a torn ligaments in his knee during the 24-14 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. He underwent successful surgery to repair the damage earlier this week.
“While the playoffs may continue without the Skins, we’re giving the fans a little extra something and at the same time thanking RGIII for a great year and hope that he gets better soon!” said WPGC program director Jason Kidd.
The station says it will change its name will revert back to WPGC on Sunday night.
