LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC)– A new ‘Department of Behavioral Health’ will integrate treatment and services for D.C. residents with both mental health and substance use disorders, Mayor Vincent Gray announced Friday morning.

More than 35,000 city residents receive treatment for mental health or substance use disorders, Gray said, and many of them suffer from both. The new agency represents a merger of the Department of Health’s addiction, Prevention and Recovery Administration and the Department of Mental Health.

“Making sure that service providers have the ability to treat both substance abuse and mental health disorders at the same time strengthens our ability to give individualized care, which offers the best chance for recovery,” said Steve Baron, Director of the Department of Mental Health.
