LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC)- An Upper Marlboro daycare employee was arrested and charged with physical child abuse and second degree assault this week, according to Prince George’s County police.
Officers were called to the 13600 block of Wood Ember Drive Monday and an investigation revealed an unlicensed day care was operating at the residence. Detectives learned that 19-year-old Johnathan Desmond Cummings, an employed caregiver there, assaulted a 2-year-old boy in his care. A witness captured the incident on video, which brought the matter to the attention of his parents.
Cummings, who admitted to kicking the child, has been released on a $35,000 bond. Police say there may be additional victims.
The Maryland State Department of Education’s Office of Child Care has issued the day care center a cease and desist order. The owners were informed they can not provide day care services until they have been properly licensed.
