HERNDON, Va. (CBSDC) — Two people are hospitalized after crashing their car while attempting to flee from police near Herndon High School Tuesday morning.
Police say the pursuit began when an officer attempted to pull over a sport utility vehicle around 7:15 a.m. on Elden Street. The SUV initially pulled into a shopping center parking, but got back on the road without ever coming to a complete stop. The driver then accelerated away from the officer.
Authorities say the chase was called off by the patrol supervisor as the cars approached the high school for safety reasons.
Although the police car slowed down, the SUV continued traveling at a high rate of speed and struck another vehicle after running a red light at the intersection of Dranesville Road and Wiehle Avenue. The force of the crash caused the SUV to roll several times.
The extent of the injuries to the SUV occupants is not immediately known. No other injuries were reported.
The crash is under investigation.
