WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — Boston’s mayor says that Vice President Biden “guaranteed” him that President Obama will pass new gun control laws by the end of January.
In an interview with the Boston Herald, Mayor Thomas Menino said that the Obama administration is going to “get it done.”
“(Biden) said, ‘Tommy, I guarantee you, we’ll get it done by the end of January,’” Menino told the Herald. “They’re going to get it done.”
Menino, who co-chairs Mayors Against Illegal guns with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, fiercely criticized National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre’s comments following the Dec. 14 Newtown school shooting that left 26 dead, including 20 children.
What the NRA announced “is not a plan, but a ploy to bring more guns into our neighborhoods,” Menino said. “I don’t believe the answer to gun violence is more guns.”
LaPierre said a week following the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School that there should be armed guards in every American school.
Obama announced several days after the Newtown shooting that Biden would be leading a group to look into new gun control legislation. Obama called for all gun buyers to go through background checks and also a ban on military-style assault weapons.
There’s “no excuse not to pass strong legislation,” Menino told the Herald. “It’s time to get this moving and moving quickly. Let’s do it now.”
Menino added that it’s time for Obama to go after gun legislation since he doesn’t need to pander to pro-gun voters since he’s in his last term.
