VIENNA, Va. (CBSDC) — Traffic is again flowing along Maple Avenue (Route 123) in Vienna, Va. after a grenade was discovered in the parking lot of an auto repair shot, closing the roadway for more than two hours.
Vienna Police say an employee discovered the grenade in the parking lot of a Merchant Tire store near Lawyers Road around 7:15 a.m. and called authorities. As is protocol, police in Vienna called the Fairfax County Bomb Squad to assist in the investigation.
Business within the “blast zone” — between Lawyers Road and Center Street — were evacuated while police worked to clear the area. They have since reopened.
Bomb technicians were able to determine the grenade had been hollowed out, rendering it inoperable and posing no danger to the public.
