WASHINGTON (CBSDC) - The honor of being one of America’s friendliest towns was bestowed upon the town of Herndon by Forbes.com on Friday.
With a population of 23,705, Herndon placed twelfth out of the fifteen towns selected to represent America’s politeness.
Among the qualifying factors rated were charitable giving, the percentage of college graduates, crime rate and the percentage of owner-occupied homes, which Forbes says is directly correlative to neighborhood stability.
Forbes credited 46% of the Herndon population with college degrees and gave it a tip of the cap for its well-below the national average four percent unemployment rate.
Also receiving honorable mention are the free concerts within the town on Fridays, its abundance of farmers’ markets and its extensive contributions from a slew of community service events.
In a statement released Friday, Herndon’s mayor, Lisa Merkel, said “it’s wonderful that the world is find out what those of us who live and work here already know – that people in Herndon are uniquely friendly, open and caring.”
She added that she hopes the coverage received from the gracious write-up will help encourage people in the surrounding areas to pay a visit to Herndon and see for themselves.
