WASHINGTON — Washington Mayor Vincent Gray is raising the speed limits on several major commuter routes.

Gray announced he would raise the speed limits after a study with automated speed cameras showed the speed limits could be increased without impacting safety. The D.C. Department of transportation announced the changes Monday.

The speed limit on eastbound New York Avenue will rise from 40 mph to 45 mph from Bladensburg Road to the Maryland line. Westbound traffic will be able to travel at 40 mph instead of 35 mph.

Bladensburg Road speeds will rise to 30 mph from Mt. Olivet Road to New York Avenue.

North Capitol Street speeds will rise to 40 mph from Michigan Avenue to Harewood Road.

Canal Road speeds will rise to 40 mph from Chain Bridge to Foxhall Road.
