AAA: 40 Percent of DC Area Residents Will Travel for Holidays
WASHINGTON — More than 40 percent of the 5.5 million people in the Washington region plan to travel 50 miles or more over the holidays.
That’s according to an annual survey from AAA Mid-Atlantic.
AAA says the average trip length will be more than 700 miles, and more than 90 percent of holiday travelers plan on driving.
Spokesman John Townsend says if the projections hold true, it will be the highest travel volume this decade, with 2.3 million people leaving the region.
Townsend also says air travel is making a bit of a comeback. The survey finds that almost 6 percent of people with travel plans intend to fly.
For the purposes of the survey, the holiday travel period is between Dec. 22 and Jan. 1.
