WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — A top Iranian military commander says the longest-range missiles the Tehran regime needs are ones that can reach Israel.

Brig. Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh tells Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency that the Islamic country doesn’t need missiles that go beyond the range that it would take to strike Israel.

“We don’t need missiles with over 2000 kilometers but we have the technology to build them,” the aerospace chief of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard told Fars. “Israel is our longest-range target.”

The Times of Israel reports that Hajizadeh made the comments in response to an internal report for Congress that revealed Iran does not have the capabilities to build an intercontinental ballistic missile.

“It is increasingly uncertain whether Iran will be able to achieve an ICBM capability by 2015,” the non-partisan Congressional Research Service stated, according to Reuters.

The Guardian reports that Western diplomats have accused Israel of leaking information about Iran’s nuclear program in order to garner support for a military strike.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hinted that Israel would launch a strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities in order to stop them from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Iran has consistently stated that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.
