MILLERSVILLE, MD. (CBSDC) - Police are asking for help from the public as they continue their search for the driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash in Anne Arundel County early Tuesday morning.
Emergency response crews arrived on the scene of the accident that occurred on I-97 between Rt. 32 and Benfield Blvd. between 3 a.m. and 3:30 a.m.
A passenger in an overturned box truck was ejected into the southbound lanes of I-97. As he was standing up in either the left or center lane of southbound I-97, he was struck by a southbound vehicle that did not stop. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 31-year-old driver of the overturned truck – identified as Scott Olczak of Pasadena – was also struck and has been taken to a shock trauma center in Baltimore with serious, life-threatening injuries.
Maryland State troopers remain on the scene of the crash. Police believe the initial accident was caused when the white, Isuzu box truck was traveling northbound on I-97 when, for unknown reasons, it entered the median, struck the guardrail and overturned.
Both the driver and passenger were ejected from the truck. The passenger was ejected into the southbound lanes of I-97, some 200 feet away from the crash site, where he was struck and killed by the hit-and-run vehicle.
The investigation is ongoing.
Police currently do not have a description of the hit-and-run vehicle. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or may have been in the area at the time is asked to call Maryland State Police at (410) 761-5130.
