WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — Twenty-one people, including 18 teens, have been taken to the hospital after a four-vehicle crash including a limo-bus in Northwest, D.C.

Police believe the bus, operated by Virginia-based Reston Limousine, was traveling westbound along Nebraska Ave. when a car traveling in the opposite direction veered into oncoming traffic, causing the bus to swerve. As the bus left the road it was struck by two other vehicles.

The bus was carrying students from the Friendship Heights Metro Station to The Field School when the crash occurred around 8 a.m.

Authorities say a 14-year-old boy was immobilized at the scene after he was ejected a from the rear of the bus.

Five people have been taken to the hospital in an ambulance with non-life threatening injuries. Sixteen others were transported in a mass casualty bus for precautionary reasons.

Traffic had been stopped along 4100 block of Nebraska Ave. for roughly 90 minutes, but has since reopened.

Parents of some of the children on the bus have arrived at the scene.

Statement from The Field School

This morning at about 7:45AM a shuttle bus containing 18 Field School students was in a collision on Nebraska Avenue near the intersection with Van Ness. Two students were transported to Children’s Hospital by ambulance. We have spoken to their parents and are awaiting further information. Based on those conversations, we understand that the injuries are not life threatening.

The other 16 students are being taken to either Howard University Hospital or Children’s Hospital for a precautionary examination. We understand that they are not injured. Again, we have been in touch with their parents and await further information.

The shuttle was making a routine run from the Friendship Heights Metro Station to The Field School as part of our daily shuttle program. The bus is run by Reston Limousines, and the driver—who was also apparently injured in the collision—is an employee of Reston Limousines. We have no information about the driver’s condition.

The bus collided with one or more cars. We do not have any information at this time about injuries to people in those cars. We are awaiting further information.

Our Head of School and another school administrator are going to Children’s Hospital and Howard University Hospital to see the students and to keep in touch with parents. We have informed all our parents of the incident.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the students and anyone else who was injured in the collision. Our school day is proceeding otherwise normally.

The Field School is an independent school located at 2301 Foxhall Rd, NW, Washington DC. It serves about 320 students in grades 6 through 12.

As more information becomes available, we will be sharing it with you.
