WASHINGTON (AP) — Although D.C. Councilmember Marion Barry is still not giving specifics of how his annual Thanksgiving turkey giveaway for needy residents was funded, he has released a list of sponsors for Tuesday’s event.

The sponsors included several firms that do business with the city, including Chartered Health Plan, Wal-Mart and lottery vendor Intralot. The Washington Post reports that Barry raised about $40,000 to give away about 2,000 turkeys and that the donations were routed through a nonprofit. Barry says Wal-Mart contributed $5,000.

Barry also clarified his comments that only “liberal white folks” care about who pays for the turkeys. He says he was referring to the media.

Barry adds that “extreme poverty” in his ward is a much bigger issue than the funding of the giveaway.
