WASHINGTON — As in the past, D.C. Councilmember and former mayor Marion Barry is refusing to disclose who’s funding his annual Thanksgiving turkey giveaway in the impoverished ward he represents.
What’s more, Barry says only “liberal white folks” are interested in knowing who pays for the turkeys.
Barry first made his comments to Washington City Paper and repeated them to WJLA-TV. He said he keeps the donors secret to protect them from the media.
The former mayor has become known for racially charged comments. He offended some Asians earlier this year when he complained about what he called “dirty shops” in his ward.
Barry’s annual Thanksgiving turkey giveaway is Tuesday. He is giving away turkeys on a first-come, first-served basis. The event also features screenings for diabetes and HIV testing.
