WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — It’s been around for some time, but the Israeli missile shield is currently getting a workout from the current conflict in the region with Hamas.

Called “Iron Dome,” Israel developed the defense system in coordination with the United States to protect populated areas from short and medium range missiles.

The company who developed the technology, Rafael, released a video to describe how the system works. The system uses a series of radar systems and missile batteries to defend a set area from attack.

The system has a 90 percent success rate in operation in addition to an easy setup, integration with other systems, and mobility.

Iron Dome was declared operational in March 2011 after three years of testing.

The U.S. provided Israel with millions to fund the Iron Dome, and is currently trying to acquire the rights to build its own.
