ASHBURN, Va. (CBSDC)– Washington Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett fielded questions from the media on Thursday as the team continues to prepare for a critical contest against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Haslett thinks highly of safety Brandon Meriweather, but is unsure whether he’ll be able make his regular season debut on Sunday.

“He brings leadership,”  Haslett said of the man sidelined by a knee injury.  “He’s got great ball skills, a guy who can make plays.”

Haslett also talked about the possibility of playing Eagles rookie quarterback Nick Foles on Sunday.

“We had him at the senior bowl so we know a little bit about him,”  Haslett said.

The defensive coordinator added the Arizona product runs the offense well and is surrounded by a host of playmakers in Philadelphia.

Defensive linemanBarry Cofield spoke today about being named captain at the mid-point of the season.

“It means a lot, especially in the face of adversity,” Cofield said.  “It’s a great feeling.”

The Redskins have lost eight straight games to a rookie quarterback and Cofield says they won’t take Foles lightly.

“Complacency is probably the number one issue. We’ve just got to prepare like we’re playing a Hall of Fame guy,” he said.

Cofield is also ready to erase the memories of the first half of the season.

“If we win out and play great football, and fulfill all our goals, no one will remember the beginning of the season,” he added.

And still knows what this team is capable of: “We feel like if we can put it together with the way our offense is playing, we can win out. We really feel like we can.”
