WASHINGTON (CBSDC) - There is now proof the Washington Redskins believe in their rookie quarterback as the leader of their franchise. The team elected Robert Griffin III a team captain on Wednesday.
Coach Mike Shanahan informed the media RGIII was one of three new captains voted in captaincy by the players. Also promoted to official roles of leadership were two veterans – defensive tackle Barry Cofield and defensive end Stephen Bowen.
“It’s very hard to vote a rookie to be your captain,” Shanahan said. “But midway through the season, you say, ‘Hey. He’s our leader.’ “
Shanahan said he couldn’t think of another team in his career he’s had a rookie captain.
Along with the newly elected captains, returning captains include Trent Williams, London Fletcher and Lorenzo Alexander.
Mike Shanahan on RG3 being voted a #Redskins captain: "I was trying to think if I've ever had a rookie captain. I don't believe I have."
