ROCKVILLE, Md. (CBSDC) - Detectives have identified a man currently in police custody in connection with two carjackings that occurred along Rockville Pike within a month’s time.
Montgomery County police say Byron Deshane Govan, 27, was arrested at his home in the 10000 block of Wamsley Court in White Plains earlier this month.
Govan is charged with several counts of auto theft, carjacking, and robbery, as well as using a firearm during the commission of a crime.
He has been charged in the carjacking of a woman in Congressional Plaza, located at 110 Congressional Lane in Rockville on Sept. 27.
Police have also charged Govan with forcing a couple from their vehicle at 11200 Rockville Pike near White Flint Mall in Bethesda on Oct. 31. Police say he stole the victims’ wallets and fled in their vehicle. A short time later, officers located the vehicle on the Capitol Beltway, and a brief pursuit ended in Silver Spring when Govan fled on foot and was not located.
The information was not immediately made available because police believed he may have been involved in other similar crimes.
Police tied him to the second carjacking upon examining surveillance footage from the incident on Sept. 27.
Govan is currently being held on bond and is awaiting a late November court date.
