ANNAPOLIS, Md. (CBSDC/AP) — The cost of cigarettes may soon be on the rise in Maryland after as a health care coalition is calling for a $1 increase in the state’s tobacco tax.
The Maryland Health Care for All Coalition is scheduled to join Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett on Wednesday in Annapolis for a news conference. Local government officials as well as students and teachers also are scheduled to attend.
Lawmakers approved doubling the state’s tobacco tax from $1 to $2 in a 2007 special session.
Earlier this year, lawmakers approved tax increases on tobacco products other than cigarettes. Those products included “little cigars” and smokeless tobacco such as snuff.
