LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — “American Idol” runner-up Adam Lambert is applauding voters in Maryland and Minnesota for approving same-sex marriage during Tuesday’s election.
“We did it!!!! Maryland and Minnesota workin the marriage equality!!!” the star tweeted.
Lambert, who first announced he was gay in 2009, was performing on “Idol” in the wake of the highly publicized Proposition 8 initiative that defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman in California.
He performed at a concert benefiting Marylanders for Marriage Equality at the 9:30 Club in the District last September. At the time, Lambert joked that if same-sex marriage was approved, he would wear a veil and garter during his next concert in the area. A date for that show has yet to be announced.
COMPLETE ELECTION RESULTS: D.C. | Md. | Va.
Lambert says he hasn’t been in a position to get involved in the issue until recently. So, when the opportunity presented itself, he felt it was overdue.
“We have a question on the ballot that is up to the people, it is non-partisan,” Lambert told All-News 99.1 WNEW in Sept. “It has nothing to do with Republican, Democrat… it’s a human rights thing.”
