McLEAN, Va. (CBSDC) — Wegmans Food Markets is recalling 31,000 pounds of its organic spinach and spring mix that was sold in 5 oz. and 11 oz. containers due to potential E. coli contamination.

The FDA says 16 illnesses, believed to be linked to the products, have been reported in New York State.

The suspect produce was also sold in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, and Massachusetts between October 14 and November 1.

Initial test results show only products with a use-by-date of October 23 have been connected to the reported illnesses. However, the store has removed all of the products with corresponding UPC codes from store shelves and have attempted to contact customers who may have purchased the potentially tainted products.

The 5 oz. packages have UPC 77890 16437 stamped on them. The 11 oz. packages have UPC 77890 16411.

The store will issue refunds to customers who purchased the recalled items.
