WASHINGTON (CBSDC/AP) — A spokesman for the D.C. transit system says any decision on when to resume service is hours away.

Metro suspended all rail and bus service because of Hurricane Sandy. New York, Baltimore and Philadelphia have also shut down their transportation systems too.

Metro spokesman Dan Stessel says trains and buses will be canceled for the entire day Monday, and a decision on when to resume service probably won’t come until sometime after 6 p.m.

He says one consideration is whether commercial utilities will have the ability to maintain power and provide stable electricity. He says the only timeline for resuming service is when it’s safe to do so.

The last time Metro suspended service was for Hurricane Isabel in September 2003.
