ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) — Fairfax County has ordered more than 100 households in the flood-prone Huntington neighborhood near Cameron Run to evacuate as rains continued from Hurricane Sandy.
The evacuation applies to residents who live on Arlington Terrace and Fenwick Drive, near Alexandria. The county plans to shut off power on those streets as a precaution.
County spokeswoman Merni Fitzgerald said the order applies to about 125 households. That’s a majority of the 200 or so homes in the neighborhood that have been subject to flooding during heavy storms in recent years.
A shelter has been opened for residents who need it, and buses are available to take residents to the shelter.
County voters are considering a $30 million bond referendum on the ballot in November to implement flood-protection measures for the neighborhood.
