WASHINGTON — The unemployment rate in the nation’s capital continues to decline.

District of Columbia officials say preliminary September estimates show an 8.7 percent jobless rate, down from 8.8 percent in August. It’s the seventh straight month that unemployment has gone down in the city. But it’s still nearly a point higher than the national unemployment rate, which was 7.8 percent in September.

The number of unemployed district residents dropped by 300 between August and September.

Mayor Vincent Gray says the numbers show that his job-creation and economic development policies are working, but he’ll continue to push for more jobs, especially in struggling neighborhoods east of the Anacostia River.
