McLEAN, Va. (CBSDC) — Traffic should begin flowing on the 495 Express Lanes later this fall and drivers will need an E-ZPass to access them.
The E-ZPass transponders are available for purchase at AAA Mid-Atlantic stores, select Wegmans in northern Virginia, E-ZPass customer service centers and the Tysons Corner DMV. They may also be purchased online.
E-ZPass sales are expected to experience a surge as the opening of the lanes draws near.
The Express Lanes are two newly constructed lanes on each side of the Beltway that run from the Springfield Interchange to just north of the Dulles Toll Road.
Rates vary for drivers along the 14-mile stretch of road. Vehicles with three or more passengers (HOV) may ride in the lanes free of charge.
HOV violators and those traveling in the lanes without an E-ZPass may face steep fines.
