Cundiff’s Struggles Prompt Redskins to Audition Kickers

by Chuck Carroll

LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — In response to the recent struggles of Billy Cundiff, the Washington Redskins will work out a number of kickers Tuesday in Ashburn.

Head coach Mike Shanahan said he was disappointed in Cundiff’s performance following last Sunday’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons. One week removed from a dismal performance in Tampa, Cundiff may have sealed his fate with a missed 31-yard chip-shot in the team’s eighth straight loss at home.

Cundiff, who ousted incumbent Graham Gano late in the preseason, has missed four of his past six field goal attempts.

Gano is not expected to be among the three kickers auditioning at Redskins Park.

The Florida State product received a call from the team Monday, Grant Paulsen reports. However, the Redskins changed their minds about bringing him in before he could take a physical.

“To go out there and not connect is disappointing,” Cundiff said Sunday. “I echo [Shanahan’s] sentiment. There’s not a single guy on the team that’s going to have higher expectations of me than myself.”

Shanahan says the team will go with the player he feels will give them the best chance to win.
