ST. LOUIS (CBSDC)– The Washington Nationals arrived in St. Louis Saturday afternoon, just hours after watching the Cardinals win a one-game playoff over the Atlanta Braves that sent Chipper Jones into retirement. Washington was greeted with a harsh reality of fall from mother nature as they disembarked from the plane.
“Freezing, freezing,” Nats pitcher Gio Gonzalez said.
It was in the high 40′s when the Nationals’ plane touched down. Temperatures were in the 80′s when they were in town just one week earlier.
But the Nationals went out in the cold and had around a two-hour workout at Busch Stadium.
Gonzalez (21-8, 2.89 ERA) will go in game one for the Nationals. Gonzalez faced the Cardinals once this season, it was in a 10-0 complete game shutout where he struck out eight Cards.
“Impressive,” Gonzalez says on the Cardinals line-up. “Last night, watching their game, they’re never going to quit.”
Adam Wainwright (14-13, 3.94 ERA) will start tomorrow for the Cardinals.
“Their offense, just to give them their respect, is very talented,” Wainwright said on the Nationals. “They have from top-to-bottom a similar line-up to ours. I would think guys can do damage from all spots.”
The Cardinals won the World Series last season, and even though they lost a lot of key pieces to that puzzle, they have a lot of postseason experience, but Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman doesn’t think that will come into play.
“I think, most of you guys know that I think experience is pretty overrated,” Zimmerman said. “We weren’t experience coming into the year winning the division and we did OK with that. You go out there and play and if you play the game the right way like we have been all year we’re going to have a good chance to win…I think we know what we need to do to win, just like everyone else does, and now we just have to go out there and execute it.”
Nationals Manager Davey Johnson announced Edwin Jackson will start game three & Ross Detwiler will start game four. Previously, he announced Jordan Zimmermann will start game two.
The weather in St. Louis is expected to be dry and in the high 50′s tomorrow and low 60′s on Monday.
