WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — President Obama in 2004 said that an unborn baby “is a potential life” while he was running for Senate.
First posted by The Christian Broadcasting Network, the video shows the then Illinois state senator talking about his view on abortion.
“My basic view is that abortion is an extraordinarily moral issue,” Obama said. “As a Christian, I think that a fetus is not a collection of cells, it is potential life.”
Obama continued talking about “viability,” explaining that Illinois should prohibit late-term abortions if the woman’s life is not at risk but doesn’t feel right telling a woman what to do with her body.
“I don’t feel that it is appropriate for me than to simply dictate to that woman what she should do with her body,” Obama said in the video. “I leave that up to her and her conscience.”
He also added that “people with good will” can be on both sides of the abortion issue.
The video comes out as a pro-life group takes aim at Obama.
The Hill reports that the Susan B. Anthony List launched the Women Speak Out super-PAC to bring the issue of abortion back into the national debate.
“The most pro-abortion president our nation has ever seen resides in the White House and is seeking a second term,” SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser told The Hill. “We will not sit back and allow deep-pocketed abortion advocates like Planned Parenthood and EMILY’s List claim to speak for all women.”
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney told CBS News in August that he only favors abortion if it involves rape, incest or puts the woman’s life at risk.
