WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — A man was struck and killed by an out of control car as he walked near the Verizon Center Monday morning.

Authorities believe the driver of the vehicle suffered a medical emergency that caused her a car veer off the road and strike the man. The car, which had New York tags, jumped the curb, struck a tree and eventually came to rest with significant damage.

The female driver was taken to the hospital where her condition is unknown.

6th Street between D and E Streets was closed for several hours while police investigated the crash, but has since reopened.

The identity of the victim, who is in his 60’s, was not immediately available.
