The Washington Redskins narrowly defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 24-22 thanks to Billy Cundiff’s 41-yard field goal with three seconds remaining to pull to .500 on the season. The kicker missed his first three field goal attempts — two from less than 50 yards — before hitting the game winner.
“Obviously if you miss too many, your employment’s not very long,” Redskins Head Coach Mike Shanahan said following the win.
Robert Griffin III continues his hot rookie season, throwing for 323 yards and rushing for 43. Griffin III also led the Redskins 54 yards down the field to set them up for the game winning field goal in the final 90 seconds of the game.
“You try to rise to the occasion,” said Griffin.
What made the final drive even harder was the headset in his helmet went out, so he had to call his own plays for the most part.
“Not too many rookies can do that,” Shanahan said.
Griffin isn’t the only Redskins rookie shining though.
Alfred Morris continues to look like a late-round steal as he rushed for 113 yards on 21 carries including a 39-yard touchdown run.
“Unbelievable” is how Shanahan summed up Morris’ first half, which included his touchdown run.
