WASHINGTON (CBSDC) - You may notice some of your coworkers and classmates missing today if they are active participants of the Jewish faith, and some public schools in the area may not even be open at all.

Tuesday evening marked the beginning of Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonement for those who practice the Jewish faith. It started at sundown Tuesday and stretches to sundown Wednesday evening – a full day during which no members of the Jewish religion are permitted to work, eat food or drink water.

Due to a large number of area residents observing the holiest day on the Jewish calendar, some school districts have elected to remain closed Wednesday.

The following school districts have acknowledged the holiday with the following response:

  • Fairfax County Public Schools: Open but excusing teachers and students observing Yom Kippur.
  • D.C. Public Schools: Open but excusing teachers and students observing Yom Kippur.
  • Arlington County Public Schools: Open but excusing teachers and students observing Yom Kippur.
  • Montgomery County Public Schools: Closed for the holiday.
  • Anne Arundel County Public Schools: Closed for the holiday.
  • Prince George’s County Public Schools: Open but excusing teachers and students observing Yom Kippur.
  • Prince William County Public Schools: Open but excusing teachers and students observing Yom Kippur.
