ASHBURN, VA (CBSDC)–The Redskins made the signing on running back Ryan Grant official today, but to do so they had to put running back Roy Helu Jr. (turf toe) on injured reserve, which means he’ll miss the rest of the season.
“It was definitely something that I was hoping I wouldn’t be on so that I could have a chance to play,” Helu Jr. said on being put on injured reserve. “But, coach [Redskins Head Coach Mike Shanahan] is looking out for my best interest and really the team’s best interest, so they kind of go hand-in-hand.”
Helu Jr. has been battling injuries all season, including an Achilles injury which bothered him in training camp and it got to the point that he couldn’t take it anymore.
“It was a heck of an experience, probably this last month, going through the Achilles and then right into the turf toe. It was very difficult.”
Because of Helu Jr’s injury, the Redskins signed veteran running back Ryan Grant and Grant is excited for the opportunity.
“I just like what they’re doing,” Grant said. “I think it’s a great opportunity for me to help them win.”
Grant said they’ve only told him to prepare like he’s going to play this week, but hasn’t been told how he will be used.
Running back Evan Royster (knee) says he is day-to-day and will try and practice today.
“I’m going to do what I can,” Royster said about practicing today.
