WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — Three people have been arrested in connection with a brutal assault near Eastern Market that left a 29-year-old man fighting for his life.
Thomas Maslin was found beaten and unconscious in the 700 block of North Carolina Ave. SE on around 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 18.
Someone other than Maslin attempted to use his credit card shortly before 1 a.m. at an Exxon Station in the 1200 block of Pennsylvania Ave. Police released surveillance video that showed three people inside a car outside the gas station.
Maslin attended the Washington Nationals game and had drinks with friends in the hours leading up to the assault.
Doctors have performed two brain surgeries on Maslin since the attack.
In an ironic twist, the three suspects were arrested for a separate armed robbery about three hours after Maslin’s assault. They were subsequently released while awaiting trial in that case according to D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier.
The suspects, who are between 17 and 21-years old, will be arraigned on charges stemming from the Maslin case on Thursday morning.
Lanier said tips from the public helped link the two cases.
