MECHANICSVILLE, Md. (CBSDC) - A car accident turned fatal Tuesday when a man died while trapped on the side of the road as emergency crews responded.
St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office says Stephen George Riley died while trapped in his vehicle on the side of Budds Creek Road in Mechanicsville around 4:46 p.m. Tuesday.
According to police, Riley was driving his Ford F-150 along a wooded area when he lost control of his vehicle and veered off the roadway into a ditch. With the car still moving, Riley attempted to regain control but over-corrected, crossing into the westbound lane, then crashed into the wooded treeline along Budds Creek Rd.
Police say he hit several trees as his car came to a stop. When police responded to the scene they say Riley was still alive trapped in his vehicle. He died before emergency responders could get him out of his F-150.
No other vehicles were involved in the collision. Speed and alcohol did not contribute to the crash, according to police, but it is still uncertain if Riley swerved to avoid hitting an animal in the roadway.
Police ask anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact Deputy First Class William Watters at (301) 475 – 4200.
