BETHESDA, Md. (CBSDC) - The long-awaited iPhone 5 debuts Friday with customers camping outside of Apple stores across the country to ensure they get one.
People have been waiting outside the Bethesda store with fervor since last Thursday night to secure their new phone and they are all waiting because they are excited for the latest upgrades.
Some people arrived to camp outside the Bethesda Apple location as early as 4 p.m. on Thursday! They iPhone 5 goes on sale as soon as doors open at 8 a.m. Friday morning, and all these patient customers have been jockeying for position. One man tells WNEW the reason everyone is willing to camp out to guarantee they get their phone, as opposed to just ordering it online:
“They sold out really quickly, at least, so you couldn’t pick it up in the store if you pre-ordered. So we had to get here as early as we could to guarantee a spot.”
But the man says it hasn’t all been waiting around. He did briefly step out of line Thursday evening to go to a bar.
New features include a brand new operating system in iOS6, a larger screen, Apple Maps in place of Google Maps, spoken navigation, vector maps and real-time traffic data
Also, Siri – the voice command system which debuted with the iPhone 4S – reappears with plenty of upgrades herself. She features a more expansive vocabulary for starters. She’s also getting better with social media. With the help of Siri users can now dictate posts directly onto Twitter and Facebook.
The last of the major updates is an improvement to the useability of Facetime, which can now be used over cellular. Prior to the latest update, two users could only video chat when both were connected to a WiFi hotspot.
