WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — One student has been shot and another is in custody following a shooting near a football field at Coolidge High School in the Northwest D.C.
The students, both of whom are in their late teens, were involved in an argument earlier in the day according to police.
The shooter left school grounds and returned with a gun around 3:15 p.m., around the time students were being dismissed. He shot the other student in the lower body after finding him somewhere between the main building and football field.
The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police say.
The school was placed on lock down for about an hour after the shooting and students remaining in the building were not permitted to leave.
Authorities were able to apprehend the suspect at a nearby location, not long after the shooting occurred.
School administrators and Ward 4 Councilmember Muriel Bowser are calling this is an unfortunate, but isolated incident. Classes will resume Thursday at the high school.
