FREDRICKSBURG, Va. — Authorities in Spotsylvania County say a 43-year-old man shot and killed his 75-year-old mother and wounded his sister before turning the shotgun on himself.

Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Mike Harvey said police received a call shortly after 1:15 p.m. on Monday.

The Free Lance-Star reports that police said the 51-year-old sister was shot in the elbow and abdomen. She was conscious when police arrived and was in surgery Monday afternoon.

Officials also say that the sister’s husband also lived at the home but he was at work when the shooting occurred.

Authorities have not released the identities of those involved.
