Is it time to tap the brakes on all of the hype surrounding Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III?

Yes, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.

The national football personality echoed Mike Shanahan’s remarks during his appearance with LaVar Arrington and Chad Dukes on Wednesday.

“I would just caution about getting too caught up in it or saying he is the next this or next that,” La Canfora said. “Let’s just see, it’s a long season. It’s a game of constant adjustments.”

Still, it’s hard not to overlook a performance that earned Griffin NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors and a spot on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

“The kid could not play any better but that doesn’t mean he is going to play like that every week,” La Canfora added. “Let’s see how things play out.”

Griffin’s next test will come Sunday against a St. Louis Rams team that nearly upset the Detroit Lions in their season opener.

The former Redskins beat reporter believes Jeff Fisher’s squad may prove a more difficult challenge for Griffin and company. The newly minted head coach has a friendly history with Shanahan.

Some believe it was their bond that helped make a trade up to acquire the second overall pick in this year’s draft — and ultimately RGIII — possible.

La Canfora believes that history has given Fisher strong insight on Shanahan.

“They have spent a lot of time game planning for this,” La Canfora said. “It will be a much prepared defense and suspect the Rams go all out… I suspect the Rams to be a better opposition than the Saints.”

Kickoff from the Edward R. Jones dome is slated for 4:05 p.m. ET.
