WEST SPRINGFIELD, Va. (CBSDC) — A second incident involving a rabid beaver in less than a week in northern Virginia is prompting worries of a serious problem.

Animal Control officers arrived at the Hidden Pond Nature Center in West Springfield, Va. on Saturday around 11:30 a.m. after receiving a call that a wild beaver was chasing children.

The children were wrapping up a fishing competition when they noticed a beaver in the water swimming towards the dock they were standing on. The beaver did not stop as it approached.

The animal jumped out of the water and began chasing the children, acting with extreme aggression.

Animal Control arrived in time to clear the area and shoot the beaver before there were any injuries.

An 83-year-old woman was attacked while swimming at Lake Barcroft last week in Bailey’s Crossroads. Results came in Tuesday proving the attacking beaver in that incident was infected with rabies.
