CAPITOL HEIGHTS, Md. (CBSDC/AP) – Prince George’s County police say a high school student was fatally shot while walking alone to school in Capitol Heights.
It happened about 7 a.m. on Old Central Avenue. Officers arrived to find 18-year-old Marckel Norman Ross shot and killed.
Approximately 30 police academy members combed the area near the shooting looking for evidence.
Detectives were interviewing school officials as well as students at Central High School. Police are also canvassing social media networks in search of a motive which was not immediately clear.
“This is a busy roadway in the morning,” says police spokeswoman Julie Parker. “So, we’re hoping that someone saw something and will let us know.”
A $25,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest in the case.
The school’s principal says Ross was an 11th grader, a strong student and bright spirit.
